COMSOL highlights Demcon multiphysics and UKFE collaboration.

Demcon multiphysics has been featured in a new COMSOL user story, highlighting our contribution to the development of advanced simulation methods for one of the world's most ambitious fusion energy programmes. Together with UK Fusion Energy Ltd. (UKFE), we developed and applied multiphysics models to analyse complex electromagnetic phenomena in a next-generation tokamak design.

The COMSOL article showcases how simulations help to gain insight into AC losses in the high-temperature superconducting magnet system of the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme, led by UK Fusion Energy Ltd. Accurately predicting these losses is essential, as they directly influence thermal management, efficiency and the operational reliability of large-scale magnet systems. To address this challenge, Demcon multiphysics and UKFE developed a range of advanced electromagnetic models that capture the interaction between multiple magnet subsystems under realistic operating conditions.

A particular challenge was balancing model fidelity and computational efficiency. By combining different simulation approaches, ranging from axisymmetric finite element models to detailed conductor-level analyses, the teams were able to evaluate complex loss mechanisms without relying exclusively on computationally intensive 3D simulations. The work demonstrates how advanced multiphysics simulation can provide critical design insights in highly demanding technology programmes and underlines the growing role of Demcon multiphysics in solving challenging engineering problems at the forefront of large-scale scientific and industrial innovation.
